Stories behind a smartphone lens

Updated

The tech industry has seen tough competitions among different categories of devices and products, but perhaps the department that has the most stiff battle is the smartphone section. Establishing its niche in the said industry, raising the bar with its new advancements isn’t new to smartphone manufacturer Huawei.

Aside from taking research and development as one of its priorities, Huawei puts great importance to what it considers as one of the cores of their business — the customers. One proof of this is the recently concluded Next-Image photo exhibit held at the Manila Hotel, wherein Huawei Philippines and Manila Bulletin put the spotlight on the top participants of the local leg of the prestigious global Next-Image Awards. Huawei also displayed the top photo entries in malls including Glorietta 3 in Makati and SM Aura in Taguig.

The said event showcased professional-like photos which the participants took using the innovative lenses of different Huawei cameras, a product of the company’s bid in encouraging Huawei users to express their art through smartphone photography. Through the Next-Image photo exhibit, Huawei became the first smartphone brand to recognize the work of its end-users.

While most of the participants used flagship, Leica camera-equipped Huawei smartphones like the Huawei P20 Pro, Huawei Mate 10, Huawei P10, Huawei P9, and the likes, a number of entries were taken using some of Huawei’s models under the mid-range department including the Huawei Nova 2 Lite, Huawei Nova 2i, and the Huawei Y7 Prime. This is a testament on how Huawei puts the most competitive technologies not just on its front-liner models, but across its wide array of smartphones.

The local leg of the Huawei Next-Image Awards tallied a total number of 10,431 submissions from 3,378 participants, one of the highest in the entirety of the said photography competition. The Next-Image photo exhibit highlighted the top 30 entries of the local leg of the Huawei Next-Image Awards.

Just recently the global stage of the said competition with around 400,000 entries from participants hailing from more than 130 countries has commenced, naming Michal Wesolek of Poland as the grand winner. Wesolek captured his entry titled as ‘Caught in a Beam of Light’ using a Huawei Mate 10 Pro. He also bagged the Best-in-Category of Good Night.

Among the pool of runner-up winners are Filipino participants Jamir Lyndon Lumbao, Mario Bejagan Cardenas, Mark Daiz, Mary Aileen Tiamzon Saldana, Rhon Velarde, and Bernard Pasatiempo Ricerdo II who used Huawei Mate 10, Huawei P20 Pro, Huawei Mate 8, and Huawei Nova 2i handsets.

Included in the respected jury who chose the final set of winners are Mark Lubell, Executive Director of the International Center of Photography, Liu Heung Shing, Pulitzer-winning photojournalist, Karin Rehn-Kaufmann, Art Director and Chief Representative of Leica Galleries International, Alec Soth, Photographer of Magnum photos, and Li Changzu, Vice President of Huawei’s Handsets Product Line.
