In a crowded smartphone market, it can be very interesting to find a smartphone from a company known for its Televisions. Considered as America’s fastest growing TV brand, TCL, a global leader in reliable, innovative and yet affordable televisions has just launched its flagship smartphone, the TCL Plex.
Unexpected? Not at all. Not known to many; but TCL is not an amateur when it comes to mobile phones. In fact, as early as 2004, TCL had already collaborated with Alcatel in creating mobile phones. Its history includes acquisition of the Palm brand from HP for use in smartphones in 2014 and in 2016 has reached an agreement with Blackberry to produce more smartphones. And so, after many years of making phones for others, they’ve finally come up with a smartphone that they can call their own.
A new candidate in the midrange smartphone race, here are TCL Plex’s main features that makes it a strong contender for the midrange race:
- Awesome Display
Undoubtedly, coming from a company who takes pride as one of the largest TV manufacturers in the world, expect a stunning display with the TCL Plex. The TCL Plex sports a 6.53 inch Full High Definition Plus (FHD+) display with a screen resolution of 2220 x 1080 pixels. Simply put, the screen can display a whole lot more detail. You get vivid colors, clear, smoother lines and a better, brighter display of images. It has its own display engine — NxtVision, that enhances whatever the eyes can see. It guarantees that the color being displayed closely matches what we see in real life. In line with their philosophy, everything displayed comes to life. It truly can display greatness!
- Premium look
It is as expected, aesthetically pleasing. With its metal and glass finish, the TCL Plex looks expensive than what it actually costs. It comes in two colors: the Opal white and the Obsidian black. Interesting enough, the colors aren’t just an ordinary black or white. We have the black unit in MB TechNews; and when held at a certain angle towards the light, it somehow creates a prism of colors. Quite cool, if I may say so.
- A big smile for the camera.
Most smartphones released this year sport multi-lens camera system in order to accommodate more features and enhance image quality in a compact device. The TCL Plex has 3 camera lenses symmetrically located at the rear together with 2 LED flashes and a fingerprint sensor. Quite unusual is the hole-punch cut-out selfie camera in front that lies inconspicuously on the top left of the screen. The three rear camera system consists of a primary 48MP AI camera, the ultra-wide 16MP camera and a 2MP camera for light and depth. Moreover, it can shoot slow motion HD video at 960fps. One feature that I do not usually see on most smartphone camera is its built-in translator; quite handy especially when travelling to a foreign country. Simply point the camera to the word, phrase or sentence written in foreign language and Plex will automatically translate it for you. No other apps needed. I also appreciate the camera’s feature that shows what each camera sensor was seeing. It somehow gives you an idea and options on what each camera can do.
- What lies beneath what is visible
Obviously, TCL Plex is loaded with the latest specifications one would expect from a midrange phone. It features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 675 processor capable of executing whatever you want your smartphone to do. It is packed with a 6GB RAM and 12GB of storage. Running on Android 9 Pie, user experience gets better and more intuitive. Flipping from one action to another or while running multiple apps, I didn’t experience any lag or slowing down. Apps and other phone functions run smoother and longer. The battery lasted throughout the day thanks to its 3820mAh battery. Equipped with Quick Charge 3.0, it can power up 50% in just 30 minutes! Capable of connecting up to 4 speakers with its Super Bluetooth adds more fun too. Imagine enjoying elevated audio experience!
